DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – The former white DeKalb County police officer who shot and killed a an unarmed and naked black man wants to have the charges dropped against him.
As previously reported, ex-officer Robert Olsen shot Anthony Hill in March 2015 as he was running around an apartment complex naked and unarmed in Chamblee, Ga., just outside Atlanta. Olsen claimed in his report at the time that Hill made aggressive and threatening moves towards him, prompting Olsen to discharge his firearm and mortally wounding Hill.
Olsen’s attorney wants the judge to drop the murder indictment against Olsen due to technicalities.
Defense attorney Don Samuel said the indictment was tainted because District Attorney Robert James had a number of office personnel in the grand jury room that shouldn’t have been there. Samuel told the judge that the prosecutors’ actions violated courtroom secrecy.
The judge is expected to make a decision next week.
Hill was a former U.S. Air Force veteran who struggled with mental health problems and was not on his medication at the time of the encounter with the police officer.
