For 62 years, I have passed the Frick near the corner of Penn and Homewood Avenues. About two weeks ago, on a Friday, my sister and I went to the “Killer Heels” exhibit. By the time you read this, the exhibit will be over. If you love shoes or art you would have loved this exhibit. I just enjoyed the surroundings and the unique shoes on display. There were shoes from the past and shoes that looked like they belonged in the future.
After viewing the exhibit, we decided to experience what is known as “Fridays at the Frick.” Families and singles were enjoying the beautiful grounds. Many had their folding lawn chairs, picnic baskets and bottles of wine. There were food trucks and fashion trucks. On that night, there was a children’s fashion show and then we found the crown jewel of the evening, a display of antique cars. Cue that music they use when the gates of heaven open up and everything gets real bright. The cars and carriages on display were beautiful and ranged from an 1881 Brougham to a 1940 American Bantam Convertible.
This exhibit is free. If you take a look at the Frick Art Museum website you will see that the exhibit closes at 5 p.m., but we were there on a Friday after 5 and it was open. It was so enjoyable. There is also a café on the grounds, but we found it a little pricey. Next summer I will indulge and enjoy what the Frick has to offer.
Now let’s move on to the North Hills. On Aug. 26, the long awaited Nordstrom’s Rack opened in what is now known as “The Block.” This is the shopping area where the Value City Department store was and after that there was Dick’s Sporting Goods. That whole area is being refurbished. The Marshall’s is still there and there is an Aldi’s and some other stores behind it. In the very near future an Off Fifth will open and a Container Store.
We took a walk around the Nordstrom’s Rack and didn’t find anything that made us want to open our wallets. The lines were quite long and we needed to get to another event. But when we got to the parking lot, I looked across McKnight Road and I saw a big sign that said “At Home.” Cue that music again. How did I miss this? Right now, the only At Home store in the area is in Robinson Township near Ikea. This new one is going to be in McIntyre Square and it looks like it is going to move in where the old Kmart was. I’m jumping for joy. If you have been to At Home, you know what I’m talking about; the store is loaded with great things for the home. I was in the Robinson store recently and they are all dressed up for Christmas and Halloween.
Now you have new places to shop and go. Go forth and enjoy.
