Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network applauds the Obama administration announcement to implement key actions to reduce the organ waiting list.
More than 120,000 people are currently on the waiting list for a life-saving organ. The recent announcement outlined a new set of actions intended to improve outcomes for individuals waiting for organ transplants, encourage more registrations and provide support for new clinical research and innovations that can increase the number of transplants.
President Barack Obama said, “America’s progress in science and technology has countless revolutionary discoveries within our reach … New breakthroughs in treating cancer and ending the wait for organ transplants . . . That’s some of what America can do.”
Dozens of companies, foundations, universities, hospitals and patient advocacy organizations have pledged nearly $200 million toward research, development and initiatives aimed at building on earlier Obama administration actions, furthering the cause of increasing organ donation. The president’s administration has committed to providing an update and an outline for next steps within 180 days.
