CLEVELAND (AP) _ A former assistant prosecutor has won a Democratic primary against the county prosecutor in Cleveland and is almost assured of assuming the office because no Republicans are on the ballot.
With more than 155,000 votes counted, unofficial results Wednesday show Parma Safety Director Michael O’Malley with 55.8 percent, defeating Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) County Prosecutor Tim McGinty, who has 44.2 percent.
McGinty faced criticism for how he handled the case of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old Black boy fatally shot by a policeman while playing with a pellet gun outside a recreation center. A grand jury declined to indict two white Cleveland officers in the case.
O’Malley drew early support from U.S. Rep. Marcia Fudge, Ohio’s top Black political leader.
The Cuyahoga County Democratic Party didn’t endorse a candidate in the race.
