Aldo Brown, a Black Chicago Police Officer has been convicted of use of excessive force in the beating of a South Shore convenience store worker, Jecque Howard. On September 27, 2012, acting on a tip that drugs were being sold; Brown and his partner, both plainclothes tactical officer went to the Omar Salma convenience store in the 7600 block of South Coles Avenue.
Video footage shows the 6-foot-3, 265-pound Brown punching the much smaller Howard in the face. Howard falls back into a cooler door and Brown grabs him and starts choking him with his left hand and then hits Howard in the ribs, the video showed. Brown then drags Howard toward the back of the store and as Howard lays on his back, Brown hit him a third time in the face. He then rolled Howard over and handcuffed him according to media reports.
Brown’s attorney, Daniel Herber. the same attorney representing Officer Jason Van Dyke who shot and killed Laquan McDonald said his client should be commended for patrolling a rough area called Terror Town. However, federal prosecutors disagree, instead painting a different picture of Officer Brown.
Federal prosecutors said Brown is no hero. Asking for up to 2 1/2 years in prison, prosecutors said the burly officer committed a “violent and gratuitous beating,” shown on surveillance video punching and kicking convenience store worker Jecque Howard and then lied about it on the witness stand, prosecutors said. “With each baseless and unnecessary strike, (Brown) gave the citizens of Chicago every reason to believe that police officers could not be trusted, were aggressive and abusive,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica Romero wrote in a filing last week. “Bad police officers — like bad apples — tend to spoil the whole bunch.”
When he appears today for sentencing before U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall, Brown will be the first Chicago cop to face prison time since the scandal broke over the fatal shooting of 17-year-old LaQuan McDonald.
