I personally have a lot of love for the 80s Perri “Pebbles” Reid, mainly through her first two albums and the blockbuster hits “Girlfriend,” “Giving You the Benefit” and “Mercedes Boy,” which she wrote.
But I must be in the minority, because social media came after the former singer and producer like an angry mob, pummeling Pebbles for allegedly helping to construct wretched contracts for super girls group TLC and, now, Toni Braxton. Both musical phenomenons thrived in the 90’s when Pebbles had switched more into management from her solo career.
During and after the Braxton’s “Unbreak My Heart” biopic, folks were snatching off pieces of Pebbles’ flesh for her supposed ruthlessness and serial exploitation of artists. This is interesting because, soon after the TLC biopic aired, singer-songwriter Kandi Burruss said that her first contract (under Jermaine Dupri) was not a good one, either. And we know how the contract situations went for two main Diddy artists, Mase and Yung Joc. So the fact that Pebbles is being singled out for particular condemnation and vilification is fascinating and curious, to say the least.
Nevertheless, social media have their own opinions about Pebbles, and it was brutal. Take a look the carnage below:
