Veteran comedic actor Danny DeVito has had some monstrous box office and TV hits, including the classic comedy “Taxi” and the movie Twins opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger. So has Sam Neill, most famous as the “dinosaur man” in the Jurassic Park franchise. The latter expressed surprised that the likes of Samuel L. Jackson and Idris Elba did not get Oscar nominations in the 2016 class.
DeVito was absence of political correctness when he brutally blurted: “We are a bunch of racist” and that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which votes on the categories for the Academy Awards, is but a microcosm of a racist society at large. This is far from a revealing statement since most are aware that racism exist, if they are honest with themselves. The question is if DeVito’s, Neills, George Clooney’s and Michael Moore’s voice will help create a critical mass that will bust open the floodgates of real change in Hollywood.
