ATLANTA – The Atlanta City Council’s Zoning Committee in conjunction with the City’s Department of Planning and Community Development will host two public information meetings to share the initial findings of a consultant team and receive public input about the City’s current Zoning regulations as Atlanta embarks on rewriting its Zoning Code.
The Zoning Code divides the city into districts in order to regulate the physical development of the land within the city and limit the uses to which a property may be put. The regulations include the height, overall size, and placement of buildings on a lot, the density at which buildings may be constructed, signage and the number of parking spaces that must accompany each new building, among other regulations.
The first public information meeting will take place from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Monday, January 11 at the Atlanta Metropolitan State College, 1630 Metropolitan Parkway in Southwest Atlanta in the ***Easley Conference Center Pavilion, located inside the Edwin Thompson Student Center Building #800. Parking is available in the Red Parking Lot (see directions below).
The second public information meeting will take place from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. onTuesday, January 12 at Passion City Church, 515 Garson Drive in Buckhead.
The Ordinance Rewrite Assessment is a project conducted by the Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD). This work is being led by the Consultant Team of TSW, Canvas Planning Group and The Zoeckler Firm.
“After months of conducting interviews with constituent groups and individuals, the Consultant Team wants to hear from the public about specific concerns as well as broad views regarding the City’s Zoning Code. I hope that many citizens will take advantage of this unique opportunity to give input in shaping our City’s future,” said City Councilmember Mary Norwood, Chair of the Zoning Committee. “It is important to note that these meetings are truly intended to gather information and critical ‘real life experiences’ from individuals who have been involved with or are interested in Atlanta’s development and evolution.”
The assessment process includes a review and analysis of best practices in major peer cities and innovative zoning and land use practices such as form based ordinances and hybrid zoning ordinances (i.e. those that incorporate form-based and conventional land use-based provisions). Additionally, the assessment will focus on how the current Zoning Ordinance implements city policies and plans, such as the Comprehensive Development Plan and will identify the strengths and weaknesses of the existing Zoning Ordinance in terms of its:
· Processes
· Structure
· Administration
· Districts
· Uses
· Site Design and Building Design
· Impact of other codes
