Rep. John Lewis to have Navy ship named after him

Unlike many of his contemporaries from a bygone era, where the likes of Martin Luther King and the Kennedy brothers were given posthumous honors of varying kinds, legendary Congressman John Lewis (D-Ga.) will have a Navy ship named in his honor.

On Wednesday, Jan. 6, the¬†Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced that the first ship of the next generation of fleet replenishment oilers (T-AO 205) will be named USNS John Lewis after the civil rights movement hero and current U.S. representative of Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District.

The naming ceremony takes place at 2 p.m. in the Cannon House Office Building, Room 121.
