Rep. John Lewis to have Navy ship named after him

John-Lewis

Unlike many of his contemporaries from a bygone era, where the likes of Martin Luther King and the Kennedy brothers were given posthumous honors of varying kinds, legendary Congressman John Lewis (D-Ga.) will have a Navy ship named in his honor.

On Wednesday, Jan. 6, the Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced that the first ship of the next generation of fleet replenishment oilers (T-AO 205) will be named USNS John Lewis after the civil rights movement hero and current U.S. representative of Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District.

The naming ceremony takes place at 2 p.m. in the Cannon House Office Building, Room 121.
