HSI Celebrates 37th Anniversary with Blues/Jazz With Pizzazz Café at Buddy Guy’s Legends
WGN’s Gloria Brown will receive the Freeing the Human Spirit Award

Habilitative Systems, Inc. (HSI) celebrates its 37th Anniversary with a jazz and blues fundraiser at Buddy Guy’s Legends on Monday, August 3, 2015.
The social services agency provides quality health and human services to thousands of Chicago’s neediest residents, including people with disabilities, seniors, at risk children and youth, and adults with mental illness and substance abuse problems. HSI has programs in 15 locations throughout Chicago’s metropolitan area.
HSI’s Blues/Jazz with Pizzazz Café will be held at Buddy Guy’s Legends, located at 700 South Wabash in Chicago’s South Loop. Starting at 6 pm, the event will feature live performances by New Black Renaissance providing the best of today’s R&B, blues, jazz and neo soul and a dinner buffet of Buddy Guy’s soulfully delicious foods. Discounted parking is available next door for $6. HSI’s guests are invited to bring your instrument to participate in Buddy Guy’s Legends “Jam Session,” which begins at 10 pm.
WGN-TV anchor Micah Materre will host the event’s program. HSI Board Member Gloria Brown, trail-blazing producer and business manager for WGN-TV who retired after 48 years of service, will be presented the agency’s Freeing the Human Spirit Award in “recognition of her many years of dedication and service” to HSI. In addition, for the first time HSI will present its Unsung Hero Award to a valued volunteer who works behind the scenes on behalf of HSI clients and the community.
“Clearly, our challenging economic climate in Chicago and Illinois has further compounded the plight of those with the greatest need in our communities,” says Donald J. Dew, President and CEO of HSI. “As the city and state struggle with critical budget issues, organizations such as HSI that assist our most disadvantaged people are hit the hardest. Our programs are essential and have saved Illinois millions of dollars over the years.”
Says Cynthia Washington, HSI’s former board chairman who is chairing the event: “Our communities are suffering during this budget crisis! Important programs are being shut down, resulting in a huge loss of services for the most vulnerable and underserved populations in Chicago. We need to subsidize these losses by hosting events like Jazz with Pizzazz! This is deeper than just having a ‘good time.’ It’s truly about saving lives!”
