MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Run DMC ignited a massive musical inferno at Sun Life Stadium just as the sun beat a hasty retreat behind the horizons, blowing up the set with their most iconic club anthems that still rock three decades after they first attained international fame and put hip hop on the musical map forever.
Rev. Run, whose tongue was very saucy for a Sunday, nevertheless kept the audience crunk as he and DMC cranked out one blockbuster blast-from-the-past after another. The duo, who asked for a moment of silence to memorialize the third member of their crew, Jam Master Jay, who was murdered in a studio in New York.
Run DMC were joined in the spotlight by their effervescent daughter, Angela Simmons, along with a couple of cast members from the explosive runaway hit of the year, “Empire,” Jussie Smollett and Bryshere Gray — who play Jamal and Hakeem Lyons, respectively — Trayvon Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton and D.L. Hughley. Atlanta radio show host and comedian Rickey Smiley emceed the proceedings on closing night of the two-day festival in the parking lot of Sun Life Stadium.
