For 14 years FashionAFRICANA has brought beauty, diversity and excitement to Pittsburgh. On March 6, at the Hall of Sculptures at the Carnegie Museum in Oakland, a woman’s clothing line was introduced during a unique fashion show.
The clothing line featured about a dozen looks in beautiful cotton prints resembling beautiful tie-dye. Like snowflakes, each print was different. The prints were made by hand and the fashions were a collaboration among FashionAFRICANA, Pittsburgh based designer Diana Misetic, African handmade fabric company Mariama Fashion Production and There Is No Limit Foundation, a non-profit that provides educational and employment opportunities to women in Africa.
Models wore fabulous custom-made headpieces of faux flowers and burlap.
FashionAFRICANA Founder and Artistic Director Demeatria Boccella says she gave Pittsburgh milliner Gina Mazzotta a bag of burlap and flowers and magic was made.
Boccella says, “My inspiration was Seattle Washington and the people walking the streets with beautiful bouquets wrapped in brown paper.”
Many guests commented that the headpieces were amazing works of art as well as the cover of the FashionAFRICANA program. This year’s program was a painting by J.G. Boccella, Demeatria’s husband. A framed original was auctioned off and proceeds from the painting will support FashionAFRICANA’s educational/summer youth programming.
This year’s honorary chairs were Pittsburgh based designer Kiya Tomlin and Mariama Mounir Cameria-Petrolawicz, founder of Mariama Fashion Production and co-founder of the There Is No Limit Foundation.
