COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Columbus’ police chief says officers repeatedly advised crowds to clear the streets following Ohio State’s football championship victory, and used tear gas and pepper spray when the revelers were unresponsive.
Police say about 5,000 people converged onto a city street near the campus to celebrate the school’s 42-20 win over the University of Oregon.
Police Chief Kim Jacobs said Tuesday officers tried to control those celebrating with as little force as possible. She says she is not aware of any reports of officers acting inappropriately.
Police made a handful of arrests following the Buckeyes’ win.
The Columbus Fire Department says it received 89 reports of mainly trash fires in the hours after the game.
