American Stars Who Have Cuban Roots

Now that President Obama has announced that the United States will resume normalized political and diplomatic relations with Cuban for the first time since the Kennedy brothers ruled the White House — and even toward the end of the Dwight Eisenhower — the country is trying to digest the fact that they may soon be able to travel to Havana and puff on Cuban cigars.
It is also a time where we can illuminate the beloved Hollywood stars whom we may or may not know have lineage that stretches back to the island nation in the Caribbean Sea.

Soledad O’Brien: The CNN anchor-turned-documentary director is an Ivy League-educated genius whose mother is of Afro-Cuban descent.


Andy Garcia: The star of The Godfather: Part III, Internal Affairs and Oceans 11 was born in Havana before moving with his family to the United States and settling 90 miles north in Miami.


Eva Mandes: perhaps best known for her role in Denzel Washington’s Training Day, was born in Miami, but her parents were both born in Cuba, to which she owes her exotic looks.

Jamie Lynn Sigler: Known for her role in the blockbuster cable gangster drama “The Sopranos, her mother was born in Cuba and then she married her Jewish husband, thus Sigler’s surname.


Eddie Cibrian: His Cuban-born parents settled down in Burbank, Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles before bring Cibrian into the world.


Laz Alonso: The man best known for his starring roles in Jumping the Broom and the all-time blockbuster Avatar is of Afro-Cuban descent.


Gloria Estefan: The iconic Hispanic singer-songwriter was actually born in Havana, Cuba.


Christina Milian: The New Jersey-born songstress is the offspring of two Cuban parents who emigrated to the U.S. from the Caribbean island nation.


Rosario Dawson: The woman who plays Chris Rock’s interrogator and love interest in the hit film Top Five was born to a woman of Puerto Rican and Afro-Cuban descent.


Sammy Davis Jr.: The legendary dancer, singer and member of the “Rat Pack” was born to a Cuban American mother, Elvera Sanchez.
