With a new school year beginning, many parents have refreshed goals for their children. Some of these goals may have to do with schooling or behavior. Let’s also look at a goal all parents want—to have healthy children. What does it mean to have a healthy child? What are the barriers to health in children?
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists several tips to bring up healthy children (www.cdc.gov/family/parenttips/):
1. Plan a healthy pregnancy.
2. Know the signs of child development so you can find out as early as possible if a child has a delay or problem.
3. Get check-ups and vaccinations.
4. Try to prevent injury—use car seats, helmets and supervise children at play.
5. Provide healthful food.
6. Keep kids physically active.
