The Bad and Worst of BET Awards 2014

redd4
LOS ANGELES — The heads of whomever dressed KeKe Palmer for the 2014 BET Awards should still be rolling down Wilshire Boulevard like bowling balls. It was an epic fail, disaster personified, and an outfit that she didn’t even look like she wanted to wear.
We suppose the Akeelah and the Bee star was not able to capitalize enough off of her starring role as Chilli in “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story,” because she is trying too hard to shed her little kid persona.
She was not the only person to commit a fashion faux pas or gaffe at the 2014 BET Awards at the Nokia Theater in downtown L.A.
Take a look at the bad and worst from the annual musical soiree.

The Worst: What is that the right?!? And what was he thinking or trying to do?

Bad: Chris Brown’s performance was spectacular and stellar, but his wardrobe choice was horrible.

This is pure confusion, more confusing than the reason behind the folks who initially casted her to play Aaliyah.

Bad: This just doesn’t work, and doesn’t help them become memorable. Does anyone even recall seeing them?

The Bad AND Worst: We don’t know which was worse — Lil Wayne’s look, his wardrobe or his constant use of the N-word during his performance. He also channeled his inner Randy Watson (of the fictional band Sexual Chocolate in Coming to America) when he slammed at the mic down and walked off, breaking the device.

Bad: Lionel Richie got a standing ovation from the very people who spent decades criticizing him for his “easy listening” and “soft rock” music — and for not being Michael Jackson. Speaking of which, they referred to photos of The King of Pop during Richie’s tribute which garnered screams from the crowd and took away the focus away temporarily from Richie. Bad move.

Worst: No, Usher. Just no.

The Worst: trends usually come and go within a few years. But it’s been over 20 years since the likes of Tupac began wearing sagging pants. And it just won’t go away.

Bad: An epic fashion faux pas.

Bad: Jennifer Hudson’s powerful voice blew the roof off the film Dreamgirls, outshining her much more famous costars such as powerhouses Beyonce, Eddie Murphy and Jaimie Foxx and earned her an Academy Award. But J-Hud has yet to learn that she does not need to scream her way through every song, ala Whitney Houston and Luther Vandross.

Bad: Chris Rock infused electricity as the host of the BET Awards 2014, cracking his whip on a number of victims, most hilariously with Donald Sterling, Paris Hilton and Rick Ross. But, like Lil Wayne, his gratuitous use of the N-Word lost him points in an otherwise great job as a host.
Some took issue with his bit where he jokingly mocked Ellen DeGeneres’ stint as the Academy Awards host — she gave out pizza — and instead handed out chicken and waffles. Some believe it was a tasteless play on stereotypes, but I thought that was harmless. Besides, urbanites love Roscoes Chicken & Waffles.

The Good: Yes, there was plenty of good during the BET Awards 2014. And one of them was BET President & CEO Debra Lee. She paused the show to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic and monumental Civil Rights Bill that John and Robert Kennedy initiated and President Lyndon Johnson ushered through Congress, giving African Americans the rights they enjoy today.
