With successful film franchises like “Barbershop,” “Friday,” “Are We There Yet?” and “Ride Along 2” in the works, Ice Cube knows what he’s doing when it comes to sequels.
His latest, “22 Jump Street,” finds co-stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum back trying to sniff out drug dealers while undercover – this time on a college campus. Cube’s Captain Dickson has moved across the street – from 21 to 22 Jump Street – but he’s even more of a hard-ass to Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) as they pursue the supplier of a drug known as “WHYPHY” (pronounced WiFi).
No one expected any substantial box office from the first film, itself an update of the TV series about undercover cops working the high school beat. But the film ended up turning a huge profit, and Cube knew it wouldn’t be long before producers would reach out.
“It’s like money talks in this business,” Cube told us at a roundtable for the film over the weekend. “Once I knew the movie had done so well, I knew sooner or later I was going to get the call, especially how we set it up at the end of the last movie: ‘I’m sending you two to college,’ you know. [Sequels] come pretty fast now.”
Below, Cube gives us his expertise on what makes a successful sequel:
