Georgia Tech redshirt senior Shayla Bivins has been nominated for the 2014 Allstate WBCA/NABC Good Works Team for her outstanding dedication to leadership and helping others.
The Allstate WBCA/NABC Good Works Team honors players at all levels of college basketball who represent the sport’s finest in the areas of leadership and charitable achievements among their peers. The student-athletes nominated for this prestigious award embody the true spirit of teamwork and giving back.
Bivins, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., has aspirations to go to law school following her final year at Georgia Tech. She is the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board and is the Student Government Association Athletic Representative.
This semester Bivens has gotten a behind-the-scenes look at how the Georgia Tech Athletic Association runs as she interns with various departments such as the Alexander-Tharpe Fund, compliance, ticketing and human resource offices.
Bivins also spearheaded the inaugural “Georgia Tech Donor Appreciation Week” in November where she organized a “Thank-a-thon,” having Georgia Tech student-athletes make phone calls and write letters showing their appreciation to all of the supporters of GT athletics. She has also aided the Jackets in various community service initiatives including the “Jacket-to-Jacket” reading program, “Girls on the Run” and the “Atlanta Two-Day Breast Cancer Walk.”
On the court, Bivins has had a great start to her final season. The 6-5 center was elected one of three captains of the 2013-14 Yellow Jackets’ season and most recently was named to the LIU Turkey Classic All-Tournament Team after scoring six points in the championship game while grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out a team-high five assists.
