Fox News erroneously claimed that President Barack Obama “has offered to pay out of his own pocket for the Museum of Muslim Culture,” in a story that was reported during a feature about a memorial being closed due to the government shutdown. Now Anna Kooiman, the “Fox & Friends” host who “reported” the fake story, has publicly apologized, according to All Alabama.

On Oct. 5, Kooiman attempted to call the President out for personally funding the Muslim Museum…but failed to check her sources.

Who was the source of her information?

Satirical website National Report, a website similar to famed news site The Onion, which is also known for its satirical content.

The fake story’s headline, “Obama Uses Own Money to Open Muslim Museum Amid Government Shutdown,” stated that Obama held a press conference announcing that he would reopen the International Museum of Muslim Cultures in Jackson, Miss., out of his own pocket.

Kooiman juxtaposed the fake story against another about World War II veterans who were denied access to a WWII memorial:

“The Republican National Committee is offering to pay for it to keep it open so that the veterans from Honor Flight are going to be able to go and see this because who did it honor? It honored them,” Kooiman said on Fox & Friends Saturday morning. “It really doesn’t seem fair, especially—and we’re going to talk a little bit later in the show too about some things that are continuing to be funded. And President Obama has offered to pay out of his own pocket for the museum of Muslim culture out of his own pocket, yet it’s the Republican National Committee who’s paying for this.

Kooiman apologized and admitted the mistake on her Twitter account.

According toa network representative from All Alabama, the erroneous broadcast will be addressed on the upcoming “Fox & Friends Weekend” program.
