Kate Middleton and Prince William have nothing on black folks when it comes to baby names. Our own royal family, the Obama’s boast such exotic names as Sasha and Malia. Of course they have to respect some boundaries that the celebrities below don’t, and the British royals have to work within the confines of family names. But when those restraints are lifted you should see what you get when music industry royalty decides to get in on the trend of odd and ‘unique’ baby names, (which are getting to be commonplace) and attempt to one-up their mainstream peers. What you getis exponentially weirder and more outlandish names, especially when you consider the fact that black people are already given to being ultra-creative with names. As a matter of fact I think I know an “Ultra.”
1. Blue Ivy
Let’s see what was Beyonce’s explanation for this never before heard baby name … oh yeah she likes the color Blue. Okay but what is the Ivy for? Makes me think of that provocative Batman villain that Uma Thurmond played.
2. North West
We’d like to say we say this coming given the source of the name, but we just didn’t. Kanye West and Kim Kardashian decided to keep up with the Carters and name their baby girl something really off the wall too. They gave their newborn daughter direction with the name ‘North West’.
3. Paris, Prince and Blanket
From the King of Pop, Michael Jackson’s kids may have been cutting edge for black celebs when it comes to names. Okay so Paris is a charming name to be tagged with, and Prince is understandable, WTH … Blanket? We try so hard to get inside MJ’s brilliant mind and see what he saw. Was our legendary king of POP thinking security or warmth when he came up with Blanket for his baby boy.
4. Jermajesty
And while we are on the Jackson’s, what about Jermaine’s contribution, er name debacle to the weird name pool. We’re talking about Jermajesty of course. While Jermaine Jackson kept pretty much to the standards when it came to the names of his other kids, it wasn’t until he started messing with Alejandra Oaziaza (who also had kids with Randy Jackson) that he started trying to think outside of the box, naming one son Jaafar, and the other Jermajesty. If that wasn’t enough, Jermaine has gone out and changed his last name to “Jacksun” to give himself something of an identity outside of his family.
5. Kayndz, Lyriq and Musiq Najm
T-Pain his expanded his love for music a step further when he named his children after musical terms, and got real creative with the spelling. How about Kaydnz for cadence, Lyriq for lyric Musiq for music. Let’s hope his household and home life are this harmonious.
6. Seven Sirius and Mars Merkaba are the son and daughter of Erykah Badhu and Andre 3000. But these names are almost tame when you consider what the other half of Outkast, Big Boi,did with his contribution to the world.

7. Bamboo Patton
The other half of Outkast, Big Boi, upped the name anty with this out of the box name for his son … Bamboo. You know, like the exotic plant. But what he didn’t considerwere the possible nicknames … Bam Bam or maybe Boo Boo. That’s the risk you run when naming children.
8. Diezel and Denim Braxton-Lewis
Hey Toni! The names honestly remind me of the label Diesel (but without the z), who just so happens to make a little bit of everything, including fly “Denim” jeans. And while they aren’t the most conventional names out there, once you get over the initial shock of hearing that someone’s name is actually Diezel (although Frank Zappa did it more than 30 years prior) and Denim, both monikers do grow on you after a while.
9. Reinbaugh Rhames, daughter of Ving is a doll, and the name has that special ring to it … like Ving!
10. And rounding out the list of unusual names is the offspring of this happy couple Lisa Bonet and Momoa who gave their son a name that we’re sure not to see duplicated. The boy’s name is is Nakoa -Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa.
