Atlanta Dream guard/forward Angel McCoughtry has been named the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Month for games played in June, the league office announced Monday.
McCoughtry was instrumental in Atlanta racing to a league-best 10-1 start to the season, becoming one of just six teams in WNBA history to win at least 10 of its first 11 games. The fifth-year pro averaged 19.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists and a league-leading 4.1 steals in June, and for the season, leads the league in steals (3.7), ranks second in scoring (20.2), sixth in assists (5.0) and 18th in rebounds (5.7).
McCoughtry, who was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week three times in the season’s first four weeks, has collected at least 15 points and two steals in every game this season, and has scored at least 20 points five times. Her 34 points at Connecticut on June 23 are tied for most in the league this season, and her seven steals against Seattle on June 14 are the most of any player in a game this year.
McCoughtry earned the third Player of the Month award of her career. She previously won the award in July of 2011 and May of 2010.
Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi was named the Western Conference Player of the Month.
The two-time Eastern Conference Champion Atlanta Dream is in its sixth season at Philips Arena as part of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Dream qualified for the playoffs in each of the past four seasons, including back-to-back conference titles in 2010 and 2011.
