Heavy Rains Flood Metro Atlanta Streets, Knock Out Power

(CNN) — Heavy rains caused several parts of metro Atlanta to flood overnight, delayed flights to the country’s busiest airport and caused wide power outages.

In the Atlanta suburb of Sandy Springs, a storm system that moved through the area damaged a dam, said city spokeswoman Sharon Kraun.

It also caused a gas leak that prompted officials to evacuate nearly 100 residents from an apartment complex in that city, Kraun said.

Elsewhere, flood waters stranded cars on I-85 and I-285, two major highways that go through the metro area.

At Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the storms delayed some arriving flights.

And across the state, about 3,000 customers were without electricity, Georgia Power said.
