A man remains hospitalized today after an off-duty officer shot and wounded him outside of a nightclub in Midtown.

CBS Atlanta reports that the gunfire at about 3 a.m. Friday involved at least one police officer, but no officers were injured.

Police say a man was in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital after the shooting near a parking lot on 13th Street and Crescent Drive, an area that’s home to several restaurants and nightspots.

Atlanta police said a fight between two groups of people broke out in a parking lot behind the Sutra Lounge. Police reported that two off-duty police officers were working security and attempted to break up the fight when one of the men involved brandished a gun.

“Witnesses confirmed that the officers gave that individual several verbal commands to drop the weapon,” Atlanta police said in a statement. “The individual, however, did not comply and turned on the officers. Rounds were fired and the subject was struck at least one time.”

Witnesses tell WSB-TV that they heard 10-15 gunshots.

“We all took cover, and just went inside the building. That’s pretty much it, we got out of there pretty quickly, and I think the police took care of it pretty well,” witness Theodore Tuncel told CBS Atlanta. “From my understanding, it was probably just some young kids fighting and got taken out of control.”

The officers were not injured and have been temporarily placed on administrative leave, which is standard for any officer involved in a shooting.
