Detroit Branch NAACP and UAW Unveil Plans for 50th Anniversary Commemorative March Down Woodward

The Detroit Branch NAACP and the UAW held a press conference today at Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School in Detroit to announce plans for the 50th Anniversary Commemorative March Down Woodward Avenue. The 50th Anniversary March will take place on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. The theme for the march is “50 Years Later… We Shall Not Default On Our Freedom!” The Detroit Branch NAACP and UAW are building a committee to help plan and execute the march. The committee will be chaired by James Settles, International UAW Ford Vice President.

“We are excited to make this historic announcement,” says Rev. Wendell Anthony, President, Detroit Branch NAACP. “In 1963 Civil Rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a march down Woodward Avenue that concluded with him giving his legendary “I Have A Dream” speech first in Detroit before delivering it again two months later in DC during the March on Washington. Just as Detroit was first in 1963 Detroit will be first in 2013. We invite everyone to come to Detroit on June 22, 2013 where the Dream originated. The march signifies that the work for freedom and justice must continue here in Detroit and worldwide.

This Thursday, February 28, 2013 the Detroit Branch NAACP invite individuals, organizations, and corporations who are interest in working on the planning committee to sign up at their General Membership Meeting that will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Detroit Branch office located at 8220 Second Avenue.

“We invite all members of labor, faith-based, grassroots, community based, anyone who wants to be involved and help us commemorate this historic event here in Detroit,” says Settles. “We wanted to make this announcement here at King High School, a high performing school dedicated to educating Detroit’s brightest and best. Our youth and young adults in this community will be active in planning and participating in this march. We must make the Dream a reality for this and upcoming generations.”
