Clark Atlanta’s Conisha Hicks Named Women’s Player of the Week

Clark Atlanta’s Conisha Hicks was named the Women’s Co-Players of the Week by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the 13th installment of the 2012-2013 basketball season, the conference announced today. Hicks shared the honored with Lane’s Crystal Rayford.

Lane’s Sha’Mar Nolen is the SIAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Paine’s Jerel Stephenson earned Men’s Newcomer of the Week honors and Ashley Watts, also from Paine, received the Women’s Newcomer of the Week.

SIAC Basketball Players of the Week
Men’s Player of the Week
• Sha’Mar Nolen, Junior, Lane
Position: Guard Height: 6-1 Hometown: Memphis, TN

Scored 22 points in two out of three games, while leading the Dragons
to a 2-1 record, including a 116-101 double-overtime victory over Fisk.
In three games, the junior, who leads the Dragons in scoring, averaged
20 points, six rebounds, and three steals.

Women’s Player of the Week

• Conisha Hicks, Junior, Clark Atlanta
Position: Guard Height: 5-4 Hometown: Lithonia, GA

Hicks poured in a season-high 28 points against Paine and played an
outstanding game helping the Lady Panthers knock off SIAC East Division
leader’s Benedict College. For the week, the Hicks, a junior from
Lithonia, GA, averaged 22.3 points, four assists, and 4.3 steals.

• Crystal Rayford, Sophomore, Lane
Position: Guard Height: 5-10 Hometown: Byhalia, MS

Rayford averaged a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds for Lane
in games last week.

Men’s Newcomer of the Week

• Jerel Stephenson, Junior, Paine
Position: Forward Height: 6-5 Hometown: Augusta, GA

Stephenson averaged 17 points, seven rebounds, and 2.5 steals while
leading Paine to a 2-0 record last week. In the Lion’s 81-74 victory
over Morehouse, Stephenson had a team-high 17 points.

Women’s Co-Newcomer of the Week
• Ashley Watts, Sophomore, Paine
Position: Guard Height: 5-6 Hometown: Augusta, GA

The SIAC’s leading scorer continues to shine this season. In her only
game of the week, Watts scored 32 points to lead the Lady Lions to a
82-68 win over Clark Atlanta.

Other Top Performers
Men
• Jaren Harris, Albany State
Harris scored 22 points and dished out four assists against Claflin
• Xavier Collier, Benedict
Scored a season-high 29 points to help Benedict defeat Morehouse
• Darrius Williams, Morehouse
Despite his team going 1-2 for the week, Williams had three solid
games, averaging 17 points and six rebound per game.
• Jeremy Whitmore, Lane
Whitmore averaged 17 points in three games, including the game-tying
3-point basket, which sent the game into overtime against Fisk
University.
• Kedric Taylor, Paine
Taylor averaged 12.5 points, six assists, while leading Paine to a 2-0
record against Clark Atlanta and Morehouse last week.

Women
• April Thomas, Albany State
Thomas scored a season-high 34 points against Claflin earlier this week
• London Richardson, Benedict
Richardson had 20 points, four rebounds, and four steals against Clark
Atlanta
