The family of the 14-year-old who was shot in the head Thursday at Price Middle School said the student is all right.
The victim, identified as Telvis Douglas, was sent to Grady Memorial hospital after yesterday’s shooting.
The shooting occurred around 1:50 p.m. just outside the southeast Atlanta middle school’s main building and gym located on Benjamin Weldon Bickers Dr.
According to WSBTV.com, Douglas’ mother said her son was headed to his next class when a familiar student approached him and started “talking smack” and then pulled out a gun. She said when he turned to run her son was shot from behind.
Douglas suffered injuries from a bullet that went through some tissue in the back of his head.
He was later released from the hospital late Thursday night.
A teacher at Price was also hurt as students ran back inside the school after the shooting, but sustained only minor injuries.
Atlanta police have not released the name of the suspect but have unofficially identified the individual as a student of the middle school.
“There is nothing more important than the safety and security of our students,” said Atlanta Public Schools Supt. Errol Davis in a news conference Thursday.
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed also offered his support for the student and voiced concern about youth violence in a statement.
“Gun violence in and around our schools is simply unconscionable and must end,” said Reed.
The city’s Employee Assistance Program is providing counseling to the students, faculty and family members.
