Morehouse’s Andrae Nelson Named SIAC Men’s Player of the Week

Morehouse’s Andrae Nelson was named SIAC Men’s Player of the Week, while Courtney English of Miles was named SIAC Women’s Player of the Week for the 10th installment of the 2012-2013 season, the conference announced today.

Paine’s Jerel Stephenson and Kentucky State’s Style Harper were named SIAC Men’s and Women’s Newcomer’s of the Week, respectively.

Men’s Player of the Week
• Andrae Nelson, Senior, Morehouse
Position: Center Height: 6-6 Hometown: Valley Stream, NY
The emotional leader for Morehouse had perhaps one of his best
performances all season in the Maroon Tigers 68-65 win over Benedict.
The senior helped snap a 16-game losing streak to the defending SIAC
Champions by notching 25 points, a career-high 21 rebounds, four steals,
three assist and a block shot. Nelson, picked as the Pre-Season SIAC
Player of the Year, has lived up to his billing helping Morehouse
earn its ninth consecutive win of the season.

Women’s Player of the Week

• Courtney English, Senior, Miles
Position: Forward Height: 6-0 Hometown: Atmore, AL

While Miles has endured some struggled this season, English has been a
bright spot for the Lady Bears. The senior earned her 12th consecutive
double-double this season with a 21 point, 20 rebound performance in
Miles 48-41 victory over LeMoyne-Owen.

Men’s Newcomer of the Week
• Jerel Stephenson, Junior, Paine
Position: Forward Height: 6-5 Hometown: Augusta, GA
Stephenson averaged 11.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists last week
for the Lions. Paine went 1-2 for the week with a win over Clark Atlanta
and losses to Augusta State and Albany State.

Women’s Newcomer of the Week
• Style Harper, Junior, Kentucky State
Position: Guard Height: 5-8 Hometown: Cincinnati, OH
Harper averaged 6.5 assists, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.5 steals, while
leading Kentucky State to a 1-1 record last week. The Thorobrettes posted a win a against Miles and a loss to Stillman.

Other Top Performers

Men
• Sha’Mar Nolan, Lane
Nolan scored 21 points to lead the Dragons to its first win the
conference this season in the team’s 71-68 victory over LeMoyne-Owen.

• Ulysses Thomas, Kentucky State
Thomas averaged 19 points and six rebounds for the Thorobreds, who went
1-1 in games last week.

• Mario Jordan, Paine
Jordan averaged 14 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.33 steals for Paine last
week.

• Justin Wilcox, Albany State
Wilcox averaged 22.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in the Golden Rams
victories over Paine (69-64) and Claflin (74-66).

• Dwayne Bingham, Clark Atlanta
Bingham recorded his second double-double of the season with 19 points
and 16 rebounds against Paine last week.

• Darquell Pulliam, Kentucky State
Pulliam averaged 18.5 points and five rebounds last week for the Thorobrettes.

• Darrius Williams, Morehouse
Williams, the SIAC’s second leading scorer, added 18 points and 13
rebounds in Morehouse’s 68-65 win over Benedict over the weekend.

Women
• Brittany Jackson, Benedict
Jackson had a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead
Benedict to its first win over Fort Valley in five years.

• Conisha Hicks, Clark Atlanta
Hicks averaged 17.5 points, six rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 2.5 steals
for the Lady Panthers last week.

• Marissa Stewart, Lane
Stewart had the hot hand in the Lady Dragon first conference win of the
season over LeMoyne-Owen. Stewart connected on 7 of 9 shots from beyond
the arch to help Lane prevail.

• Ashley Watts, Paine
Watts, the SIAC’s leading scorer, averaged 18.3 points and four
rebounds in three games for the Lady Lions last week.

• April Thomas, Albany State
Thomas averaged 22.5 points last week for the Lady Golden Rams.
