First Lady Michelle Obama Reads ‘A Visit From St. Nicholas’ to Children at Hospital

First Lady Michelle Obama recently made a Christmas visit to Children’s National Medical Center and took some time to read the holiday classic “‘Twas The Night Before Christmas” to children there.

The First Lady was joined by children from the medical center who sat on either side of her as she read from the Christmas favorite. Though the poem says that not a creature was stirring, the First Dog, Bo, made his way up to Obama’s lap just as she was beginning to read and made himself comfortable for the remainder of the reading.

“This is exactly what he does at home,” said the First Lady. “He tries to beat Malia and Sasha to my lap.”

According to the official White House Blog, “paying a visit to the young patients at the Children’s National Medical Center is a holiday tradition that dates back to the 1950s, when Bess Truman was First Lady.”

If you’re interested in seeing more Christmas celebrations from the First Family, the official White House blog has a number of holiday specials, including the 2012 White House Holiday Card and a video of Bo inspecting this year’s Christmas decorations.

You can also head to the ADW homepage and view President Barack Obama’s weekly address to Americans, in which he reflects on the meaning of Christmas at the Obama household.

“For my family and millions of Americans, it’s a time to celebrate the birth of Christ, to reflect on His life and learn from His example,” President Obama said in the address.
