NAACP: Connecticut Shooting Victims, Families in Our Thoughts and Prayers

Families of shooting victims in Newton, Connecticut

NAACP leaders released the following statements on today’s tragedy in Newtown, Conn., where at least 28 people were reported dead after a school shooting, including 20 children:

“Our hearts are with the families of Newtown today,” stated NAACP Connecticut State Conference President Scot X. Esdaile. “The NAACP will do everything in its power to help the community in its time of need. The Greater Danbury NAACP has been working to make sure that everyone in the area is safe, and the state conference leadership is offering our resources as well.”

“This type of event reminds us how important family is and how precious our children are,” stated NAACP Chairman Roslyn M. Brock. “The healing process must begin now as we join communities and families together in Connecticut and across the nation.”

“Today’s horrific crime claimed so many lives and so many futures,” stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and the entire community of Newtown. We will continue to support the community as it recovers from this tragedy.”

The NAACP released the statement in response to one of the deadliest school shootings in US history. A gunman opened fire early Friday in a Connecticut elementary school, killing 28 people — most of them children, a law enforcement official receiving information from the scene told CNN.

At least 10 of the dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School were students, a different law enforcement source familiar with the investigation said. Among the dead were the school’s principal and psychologist, according to a parent who was at the school when the incident happened.

The mother of the suspected gunman was also among the dead at the school, a senior law enforcement official familiar with the investigation told CNN, while the suspect’s brother was found dead in a residential location in Hoboken, New Jersey.
