Today the Georgia Department of Education recognized 45 schools in the metro Atlanta area when it named 79 of the state’s highest performing schools with a high population of low-income students. It also highlighted an additional 156 that have made the biggest academic strides with students who are often associated with troubled and unstable homes.
On the Georgia Department of Education’s website State School Superintendent John Barge commended the achievments of the schools and the students.
“These schools are shining examples of what we can achieve in public education in Georgia,” Barge said. “I want to take what’s working at our Reward Schools and replicate that in every school in the state. These are the schools making education work for all Georgians.”
The high-performing and high-progress schools, named “reward schools” under the state’s new accountability system, also managed to make significant progress in closing the achievement gaps between white students and students of color and to increase graduation rates.
The list includes 45 schools from the Atlanta metro area in grades K-12 in districts from Atlanta Public Schools to Fayette and Forsyth County. The list of 45 metro area schools is below.
