2012 Olympic Medalists Honored in DeKalb County

DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer Burrell Ellis and the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners held a special “Olympic Tribute & Celebration,” honoring DeKalb County’s two Olympic Medalists DeeDee Trotter and Angelo Taylor. The County-wide tribute and celebration was held Thursday, Sept., 20, at the Decatur Square in Decatur.

Trotter, a graduate of Cedar Grove High School, won both gold and bronze track & field medals in the 4x400m and 400m events respectively; and Taylor, formerly of Southwest DeKalb High School, won a silver track & field Medal in the 4x400m during the Games of the XXX Olympiad in London.

“They are truly the world’s and DeKalb County’s Olympic champions,” stated Ellis prior to the event.  “We are very pleased to have this opportunity to invite everyone in DeKalb County to meet and greet our Olympic champions.”

Ellis also proclaimed: “With the support of our DeKalb County School Board, we are placing a special focus on our youth to attend. In addition to inspiring future Olympic stars, we are encouraging them and their parents to come see two world champions who attended school in DeKalb County just as the students are doing now.

“Because we know, active participation in youth athletic programs is a way to help curb youth violence.” he continued.
