These are Major League Baseball’s 2012 Beacon Awards program participants and honorees at the luncheon presented by Belk Aug. 16. The luncheon was part of the 2012 Delta Civil Rights Game played between the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Earth, Wind and Fire received the MLB Beacon of Change Award. U.S. Rep and Civil Rights Icon John Lewis received the Beacon of Light Award and MLB’s Don Newcombe received the Beacon of Hope Award. Standing together are Ralph Johnson (from left), founding Earth Wind and Fire member; Political and Civil Rights leader Julian Bond, who presented the award to Congressman Lewis; Phillip Bailey, founding Earth Wind and Fire member; Verdine White, founding Earth Wind and Fire member; and Newcombe, four-time All-Star; former Cy Young, MVP and Rookie of the Year Award Winner.
