Fowles, Sky Edge Dream, 71-69

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Dream had their three-game winning streak snapped when Sylvia Fowles scored 21 points, including two go-ahead free throws with 33 seconds to play as Chicago nipped Atlanta, snapped a four-game losing streak with a 71-69 home victory over Atlanta on July 1.

Chicago’s win also snapped their its four-game losing stretch.
The Sky (8-5) rallied from a 14-point third-quarter deficit and led by as many as seven in the fourth before the Dream (7-8) briefly reclaimed the lead at 69-68 on Sancho Lyttle’s 3-pointer with 47 seconds remaining.

Fowles also had 12 rebounds while Shay Murphy scored 13 points, Sonja Petrovic had 12 and Le’coe Willingham added 11 for the Sky. Angel McCoughtry paced the Dream with 21 points, Lyttle had 18 and Lindsey Harding added 13.

McCoughtry scored eight points over a 4-minute span early in the third quarter as the Dream used a 14-2 run to open a 47-33 lead. The Sky replied with a 13-3 surge which included a pair of Willingham 3-pointers that cut the gap to 50-46.

But Aneika Henry hit two free throws and McCoughtry scored on a short jumper to extend Atlanta’s lead to 54-46 entering the final quarter.
Chicago made another push early in the fourth quarter.
Trailing 57-48 following a Cathrine Kraayeveld 3-pointer, the Sky used a 14-point swing for their first lead since the second quarter on the way to a 68-61 advantage with 2:23 left on a Murphy layup.
But Atlanta rallied as McCoughtry hit a layup and a 3 pointer and Lyttle followed with a 3-pointer for a 69-68 lead with 47 seconds left.
Fourteen seconds later, Fowles was fouled by Henry and hit two free throws to put the Sky ahead for good.
Chicago led 19-16 after one quarter thanks to Murphy’s buzzer-beating 3 pointer. Atlanta had a 9-2 run in the final 2:28 of the second quarter for a 33-30 halftime lead.
Lyttle had 11 first-half points for Atlanta.
