Rev. Dr. Albert D. Mosley Becomes New President Of Gammon Theological Seminary

The Rev. Dr. Albert D. Mosley will officially become the 15th president/dean of Gammon Theological Seminary when he is inaugurated to lead this school of religion in the Atlanta University Center. The inaugural service will take place at Cascade United Methodist Church, 3144 Cascade Road, S.W., at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Additional activities celebrating the 128th Founder’s Day of Gammon will also take place on Oct. 18 and 19.  These events include Thirkield-Jones Lectures in Everett Chapel at Gammon Hall; the Inaugural Gala held on Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis; closing worship services including the presentation of the Distinguished Alumni Award at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, also in Gammon Hall, Everett Chapel; and finally, the Alumni Luncheon will be at Central United Methodist Church, 503 Mitchell Street, S.W. on Oct. 19 at 12:30 p.m.

Gammon Seminary, one of the 13 fully-accredited schools of theology of the United Methodist Church, is the

denomination’s only historically Black seminary.

Founded in 1883, Gammon is a co-educational, professional graduate school of theology; and one of the six denominational constituent seminaries located at The Interdenominational Theological Center in the Atlanta University Center.

Rev. Dr. Mosley was born and raised in rural Mississippi.  He has earned degrees from Millsaps College, Duke University and Yale University.

He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Bishop’s Medal given by the Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church for meritorious service to church and society.  Dr. Mosley is also the recipient of the William J. Griffith Distinguished University Service Award given by Duke University, and the Distinguished Preaching Award given by the Divinity School at Duke University.  Recently, Rev. Mosley received the Harry Denman Award for Evangelism from the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.  The Northwest Interfaith Movement of Philadelphia also recently honored him with the first annual Richard R. Fernandez Religious Leadership Award.

Before assuming the position of president/dean at Gammon, Dr. Mosley was the University chaplain of The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, directed the Campus Ministries Department and chaired the Campus Ministry Advisory Board.  Mosley’s service to the larger university community included serving as a member of the University Retention Task Force, the President’s Working Group on International Experiential Education, the Council of Homewood Advisors (the university’s senior academic and student affairs policy-making body), and the Undergraduate Affairs Council.  Additionally, he initiated and led a university-wide conversation series on race (Race Matters) and reinvigorated the university’s Muslim-Jewish Dialogue.

Before becoming chaplain at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Mosley served as the Senior Pastor of the historic James Memorial United Methodist Church in Philadelphia (the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference’s largest African-American congregation).   Concurrent with his service to James Church, Rev. Mosley also worked as interim director of the Center for Civic Engagement and adjunct professor in the Penonni Honors College of Drexel University, teaching courses ranging from comparative ethics to public life and leadership.

His  previous appointments have included Senior Pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Schuylkill Haven, Pa. and  chaplain and director of Multi-Faith Studies at United Methodist-related Albright College in Reading, Pa.

He also has held the position of assistant dean and director of Religious Life at Duke University.

The Inauguration Ceremony at Cascade United Methodist Church, and the Thirkield-Jones Lectures and closing worship service on Gammon’s campus are free and open to the public.
