ATLANTA – With a record number of high school students opting to pursue a higher education,
competition can get tough.
To again help metro Atlanta students achieve that ultimate educational opportunity, Atlanta City
Council President Ceasar C. Mitchell will host his 10th semi-annual College Prep Series, offering
free college prep entrance exams and counseling for students and parents.
The series’ SAT/PSAT Prep Day will take place this Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 8 am until
1pm at Fredrick Douglass High School, 225 Hamilton E. Holmes Drive, S.W. Atlanta.
Additionally, in an effort to promote healthy living, Mitchell has added a Wellness/Fitness
component based on the First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative. The free event
series is open to all middle and high school students and parents in metro Atlanta.
The series concludes with a College Fair Express at Atlanta City Hall.
“It is so important that students prepare as early as possible for college entrance,” said
Councilman Mitchell. “This college prep series not only helps build their test taking skills, but
it also gives parents a chance to learn what they need to do to assist their child in gaining
admission into the college or university of their choice.”
Higher education experts say competition to enter many colleges and universities is at an all-
time high.
Statistics show that the nation’s colleges are attracting record numbers of new students as more
finish high school and young adults opt to pursue a higher education rather than languish in
a weak job market. Georgia’s public colleges reached record enrollment last fall, and schools
in metro Atlanta are helping fuel those figures, according to a recent analysis. Enrollment at
Georgia’s public colleges reached more than 311,000 students this fall — an increase of more
than 100,000 students over the past decade.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, college enrollment was projected
at 19.6 million two years ago. College enrollment is expected to continue setting new records
through 2018, increasing by nearly 9 percent.
