Attorneys for Occupy Atlanta report that they have served subpoenas to Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Atlanta Chief of Police George Turner and 3 other high-level officials in the police department and City Hall.
The subpoenas were issued for all five men to testify in the trial of Derrick Boazman, Georgia State Senator Vincent Fort, Activist Joe Beasley and more than 50 Occupy Atlanta members who were arrested following a protest that lasted several days in Woodruff Park.
The group of protestors were arrested on Oct. 25 for remaining in Woodruff Park after Mayor Reed rescinded an executive order allowing them to remain in the park after closing hours.
The protestors are facing six months in jail and a $1000 fine and the trial is set to begin Monday, December 17, at the Atlanta Municipal Court.
The trial is expected to last a week and more than 80 defendants and 50 officers are scheduled to testify.
More than a dozen volunteer attorneys for Occupy Atlanta have been filing and arguing motions since the arrests in preparation for Monday's scheduled trial before the Honorable Crystal Gaines. The mayor, chief of police and other officials have been subpoenaed to testify so they can be questioned about the basis for evicting the Occupy protestors from the park.
