October 20 through the 23, at the Omni William Penn Hotel, the Pierians Inc. 18th National Assembly took place in Pittsburgh, Pa., with the Pittsburgh chapter as the host. The grand reception was on Oct. 20 and dozens of Pierians were in attendance.
Pittsburgh native Cara Walker, who now resides in New Jersey, is the national president of Pierians, Inc., which is an African American organization of women who have an appreciation for the arts. This year, Karen Abercrombie of the movie “War Room” was made an honorary member of the Pierians. The name Pierians is taken from the word Pieria, which is a region of Ancient Macedonia, one of the earliest seats of the Muses. The Pierians’ spring was a fountain in Pieria sacred to the muses and believed to communicate poetic inspiration.
The organization is devoted to the purpose of promoting and encouraging the study and enjoyment of the fine arts. The group became incorporated in 1983 in Baltimore, Md. Since the chartering of the first chapter in Baltimore, there have been 10 other chapters formed, making The Pierians a national organization.
During the grand reception guests enjoyed beautiful artistic displays by Harriette Meriwether, Marlene Gary-Hogan, Tina Brewer and Women of Visions. The mission of Women of Visions, Inc. is to promote the art of African American women through self-promotion and education. Jazz keyboardist Kevin Howard provided the soundtrack. Howard is a solo artist and founder of the award-winning contemporary smooth jazz group, Serious Inquiry.
