Nearly 500 were in attendance for the BASH (Black Association of South Hills for Women) Annual Scholarship Luncheon and fashion show on April 2, at the Doubletree by Hilton-Meadowlands.
Guests enjoyed vendors, a tasty lunch, a great fashion show sprinkled with workout sessions led by certified fitness instructor Charla Pettis Murphy, owner of Akwaaba Fitness in McKeesport, Pa.

This year’s fashions were courtesy of Kohl’s In South Hills, Dress Barn in Trinity Point, Galleria Chico’s, Tuxedo Junction South Hills and Lenese Callea, NYC. BASH husbands Bernard Mack and Gary Walton made a return appearance as the fashion show mix masters. On the runway: William Adams, Desmond Goins, Scott Goins, Kesha Hairston, Karyn Hakeem, Mabel Lee, Phoenix Moore, Jackie Reynolds, Gloria Richardson and Reverend Richard White. This year’s chairpersons included: Lynnelle Goins, Joy Baker, Andrea O’Daniel, Diana Ward, Loretta Williamson and Kim Jackson.

A highpoint of the show is always the 50/50 raffle. This year’s winner walked away with $870. BASH has awarded numerous scholarships to deserving high school seniors. The 2015 scholarship awardees included: Ali Jackson, Danny Matulula, Taj-Aya Barnes, Joshua Lacks, Taylor Ellis, Aliyah Moore, Elijah Frazier, Malik Wells, Hannah McClendon and Kiera Whitson.

BASH was founded in May 1978 by 11 African American women who saw the need for new residents to form a solid group of industrious and creative women. The organization has served as a welcoming committee for new residents to the South Hills, as well as a social, civic and charitable organization. BASH was awarded the Washington, PA, NAACP Human Rights Award.
