Lawrence also releases executed subpoena for former Flint Emergency Manager Darnell Earley

Rep. Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), the Ranking Member on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on the Interior, released the following statement regarding Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder agreeing to testify before Congress.

“I am thankful Gov. Rick Snyder has finally recognized the need to step up and aid Congress in the search for truth and justice on behalf of the city of Flint, and the children and families who will forever be scarred by this manmade disaster. His testimony could not have been secured without the full dedication and power of the Committee, on both sides of the aisle. This is also proof that the search for truth and the power of truth will always triumph in the end,” Ranking Member Lawrence said. “I fully expect Gov. Snyder will provide a complete account of how the poisoning of an entire city was allowed to occur. The questions are simple, and have gone unanswered for far too long. The people of Flint and the American public deserve to know the following: who made the decision to shift the water system from Detroit to the Flint river, why did they ignore longstanding evidence of problems with the Flint water system, and when did they become aware of the massive amounts of lead being consumed by unsuspecting residents following the April 25, 2014 shift.”

In the interest of transparency and full disclosure, Ranking Member Lawrence is also releasing a copy of the executed subpoena ordering Darnell Early to Washington to answer questions about his role in the crisis as the former Flint Emergency Manager, appointed by Gov. Snyder.

“It is my sincere hope that Mr. Earley complies with this subpoena in the spirit in which it is intended; that is to uncover the information needed to address this ongoing crisis and to ensure that no city in America suffers such a monumental catastrophe ever again.”

According to the signed document, the subpoena was executed at approximately 9:40 a.m. on February 4th, 2016. The subpoena directs Mr. Earley to appear for a deposition before Committee Counsel on Feb. 25th.

“Though the deposition is not a public venue, I want to assure the people of Flint, and the American public, that I will be there and that I and my colleagues will not rest until all of the necessary questions are answered.”
