Former Nebraska superstar running back and exiled NFL player Lawrence Phillips was found dead in his prison cell, an ignominious conclusion to a once very promising career. Officials are initially investigating the tragic episode as a suicide, but no official word on the cause of death has been released yet.
Philips was projected by most sports pundits to be a game-changing running back but was upended repeatedly by violent incidents at the University of Nebraska and during his short NFL tenure. He was found just after midnight Wednesday when staff conducted a routine security check and noticed Lawrence was unresponsive, tmz.com reports.
Officials say he was transported to an outside hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 1:27 a.m. Next of kin has been notified.
Phillips had forced into into solitary confinement he was suspected of murdering his cellmate back in April 2015, a 37-year-old named Damion Soward.
Phillips had been recently charged with murder and his prospects of ever getting out of prison again seemed slim.
Phillips, 40, had played with the Rams, Dolphins and 49ers before he was banished from the NFL and locked up in Kern Valley State Prison in California on a 31-year sentence for an assortment of violent and felony convictions.
