The murder sentences of Heather Mack and her boyfriend have been reduced.Tommy Schaefer was sentenced to 18 years for killing Sheila von Weise-Mack at a resort in Bali, and stuffing her body in a suitcase.

Heather Mack was sentenced to 10 years for helping him.

Mack and Schaefer murdered Miss Mack’s mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack, from Chicago, in an upscale market Bali hotel in August 2014. They have had their sentences cut by one month.

According to Bali Indonesia News feed they got one month taken off of their sentences. It was part of an annual review conducted by the Indonesian justice system, where Christian inmates are offered cuts in their sentences at Christmas.

Consequently under annual remissions granted over Christmas, the two US citizens,Heather Mack and her boyfriend Tommy Schaefer, who have been sentenced to ten years and 18 years in jail respectively, have been awarded a small cut in their sentences.

Though the cut is but a month short of the original sentence it was met by criticism as other convicts in Bali such as British drug-smuggling grandmother Lindsay Sandiford, 59, who is on death row for attempting to smuggle 10.5lb of cocaine through Bali airport in May 2012, received no benefit.

‘It’s not a huge cut  considering that  they’re doing 10 years and 18 years. Questions have arisen as to why Lindsay Sandiford faces death with no remission and the Americans who actually kill someone are shown leniency.

The rationale is not explained. Perhaps the impact of the cocaine’s eventual harm to many influenced the Bali Court decision. Maybe not.

The courts have heard that after a fierce argument between Schaefer and her mother, 62-year-old Chicago socialite Sheila Wiese-Mack in the five-star  the couple killed her in her hotel room and then stuffed her body into a suitcase, which they loaded into the rear of a waiting taxi.

They fled from the hotel, resulting in the taxi driver reporting the incident at a police station.  After opening the suitcase police found the battered body of Mrs Mack followed by the arrest later of Heather Mack  and  Tommy Schaefer  at another hotel where they were apprehended.
