Boy Scout Awardee Marlow H. Colvin, ComEd/an Exelon Company V.P Governmental Affairs  Expresses Gratitude

Next Saturday November 14  the Boy Scouts of America, Pathway to Adventure Council will present five community leaders with the Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award on Saturday, November 14 in recognition of their outstanding service to inner-city youth.

The award is named after American Civil Rights leader Whitney M. Young Jr. who dedicated his life to serving and improving the lives of African Americans across the country.  One of the five distinguished community leaders, Marlow H. Colvin, VP of Government Affairs at ComED is also a Chicago Defender Man of Excellence Class of 2015 for which he served as class president. The newspaper recognized his community work above and beyond the line of duty.  We are so proud of him and excited about his upcoming recognition.

We took time to ask him a few questions about being selected  to receive the  Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award and he spoke very candidly with us.

Chicago Defender: How Do you feel about being selected to  the Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award?

Marlow H. Colvin:  “I am both thrilled and humbled to receive consideration for such a prestigious award from one of the Nation’s most prominent organizations. For more than a century the Boy Scouts of America have been developing the character of young boys and the evidence speaks for itself. When our young people involve themselves in Scouting our communities reap the benefit. Scouting has developed some of the nation’s most successful citizens in education, medicine, politics, business and a host of other successful careers which contribute to the fabric of our nation.”

Chicago Defender: Why is this award particularly meaningful to you?

Marlow H. Colvin: What makes the award so meaningful is that it comes directly from the community that raised me. I grew up in the Scouts, participating as a third-grader, in my local Cub Scout Pack that met every Saturday morning in the basement of St. Felicitas Church. So to receive such an award, named after one of my personal heroes, Whitney M. Young, Jr., makes this that much more of an honor.

Chicago Defender:  You were a Boy Scout, so are you indebted to them?

Marlow H. Colvin:   Finally, while I thank the Boy Scouts of America for this honor, I especially would like to thank Dwayne Hunter for his tireless advocacy for Scouting on the Southside of Chicago. During my tenure as an Illinois State Legislator, Dwayne would visit my office to keep me aware of what the Scouts were doing on the Southside and he’s done the same since I’ve been here at ComEd, and I’d like to thank him for his service. Now more than ever we need Dwayne’s grassroots efforts to grow the influence of the Boy Scouts in communities across inner-city Chicago.

Chicago Defender:  So you’re looking forward  to the evening and the award?

I look forward to the evening of the 14th to celebrate all that the Boy Scouts have accomplished, and add my voice of congratulations to the Scouts, and the prominent awardees I’ll share the stage with.”
