DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Multiple inmates and DeKalb County Jail employees are in trouble after a group of jail occupants shot a rap video inside the suburban Atlanta Jail and then uploaded it onto YouTube.
An investigation has been launched after a video, boldly called “Thuggin’ Live from DeKalb Jail” was recorded from the county jail’s video visitation system and has embarrassed the entire DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, WSB-TV reported.
DeKalb County Sheriff Jeffrey Mann he “hopes they enjoyed their 15 minutes of fame.”
The television station showed it to former corrections Officer Devontae Thomas, who quickly characterized the video constitutes a serious security breach.
“They are doing something they are really not supposed to be doing,” Thomas told Channel 2 Action News.
For rap fans, this of course, is eerily reminiscent of the time when current superstar rap impresario T.I. was allowed to make a video inside the Fulton County Jail in neighboring Atlanta about a decade ago. T.I., aka Clifford Harris Jr., whose career was already on an upward trajectory at the time of his jailing, experienced a meteoric rise in popularity nationwide and internationally following that debacle and breach of security. It cost a few sheriff deputies their jobs.
The 2 minute 27 second video shows the inmates wildly performing to a rap song. One man sprays some sort of liquid. Another takes off his shirt. Then you see flames from an inmate’s lighter.
“That lighter can be used to light a fire. It can be used to create a diversion,” said former jail Lt. Kyle Jones.
He is currently running for DeKalb County Sheriff.
“At some point and time somebody’s eyes should have seen that and some action should have been taken,” said Jones.
The video visitation system allows callers to see one another without having to be in the jail. Mann says the inmates will be disciplined and prohibited from using the system.
“The system has to be overhauled to prevent this from happening,” Jones told the television station.
Thomas also mentioned that the video shows the inside of the jail.
“The layout of showing the building is just not a good thing,” Thomas said.
The sheriff says the system is only supposed to be used for people who have been registered and approved to use it.
He said his office is reviewing the system to minimize future breaches.
