Does Bill Cosby shatter the 'Huxtables'?

cosbys ebony magazineThe newest cover of Ebony magazine is ruffling a few feathers. The November 2015 issue tackles challenges that the black family deals with. Interestingly, the magazine chose to put a shattered portrait of the “Huxtables” on the cover. It’s a broken photo with Bill Cosby‘s face at the center of the most damaged portion. The editing of the photo definitely has some up in arms, while others are singing its praises.
The bottom line, what Bill Cosby did in his personal live should not tarnish the legacy of the “Cosby Show”. It is an iconic piece of history that helped revolutionize the perception of the black family. The Huxtables represented a positive light during the Reagan era, and promoted hope despite the plague of crack cocaine during the 80s.
What we must accept is that, regardless of an individual’s personal struggles, you cannot strip him or her of the good they have done. Take for example, other shows like “A Different World” and “Fat Albert”. Their episodes taught valuable lessons, represented blacks in a positive light, and offered something to the world that is eerily void in our current day and time.
Granted, Bill Cosby may deserve whatever negative attention he gets due to his questionable activities in the past. However, shattering a picture that also includes Phylicia Rashad, Lisa Bonet, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Tempestt Bledsoe and Keshia Knight Pulliam is not justifiable on the basis of one person’s actions. It is not debatable that the black family has its challenges, but tarnishing the image of one that represented the essence of positivity is distasteful.
