HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) _ Auditors have found that Cheyney University of Pennsylvania didn’t properly document the eligibility of students before giving them nearly $30 million in federal grants and loans in the last four years.
Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education officials said Thursday that the findings from a 14-month review of financial aid records were sent to the U.S. Department of Education last week.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the auditing firm, Financial Aid Services, says federal student aid was mismanaged. Chancellor Frank Brogan tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that federal regulators will use the report to determine how much must be repaid.
Cheyney University in suburban Philadelphia is the nation’s first historically Black university.
Pennsylvania’s auditor general, Eugene DePasquale, has sounded an alarm over Cheyney’s finances amid rising debt and falling enrollment and revenue.
