Ted Turner is a media revolutionary, visionary and business magnate who completely changed the face of news forever with the invention of 24-hour news service in the 1980s when he founded Cable News Network, better known to the world through the iconic acronym “CNN.”
“Ted Turner, by every definition, by every example, is a great man,” said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.
Before Turner, news only came on three times a day — early in the morning, noon and 6 p.m. That’s it. If you missed those times, you just did not receive your up-to-date news. Turner created a platform where millions of Americans can get their news whenever they want or need to, at all times off the day and night.
The multifaceted business mogul and philanthropist was finally honored when he was bestowed “Ted Turner Drive” during a special ceremony conducted by Mayor Kasim Reed.
“I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it, but I really do,” Turner said. “Thanks for coming out in the heat and enjoying it with me.”
Turner was jooined by family members, including Laura Turner Seydel, daughter of Ted Turner, John R. Seydel, III, grandson of Ted Turner, Hala Moddelmog, Metro Atlanta Chamber, Xernona Clayton, The Trumpet Awards Foundation, The Atlanta Braves, The Atlanta Hawks, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., Atlanta City Councilmember C.T. Mayor Kasim Reed and the City of Atlanta recently approved the ordinance renaming a portion of Spring Street between Whitehall Street and West Peachtree Street after entrepreneur, media mogul and philanthropist Ted Turner to commemorate his significant cultural and economic contributions to the city.
The portion of Spring Street renamed Ted Turner Drive is near the area where Turner established some of his prominent business endeavors, including Turner Broadcast System, Inc. (TBS), the CNN Center and Ted’s Montana Grill. As part of the unveiling ceremony, CNN, TBS, Cartoon Network, the Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Braves will set up exhibits and provide informational materials and giveaway items to attendees.
Turner is best known for founding CNN, the first 24-hour cable newsnetwork, Turner Broadcasting and providing a record-breaking $1 billion gift to support the United Nations, which created the United Nations Foundation.
