COLLEGE  PARK, Ga. —
An honor roll student who was watching TV inside of her home was struck and killed by a stray bullet that came through her home during the 4th of July celebration, police state.
Police suspect that the shooter of the bullet that hit Rasheedah Evans, 16, fired it in celebration of the 4th of July. Authorities said they received multiple calls about gunfire on Saturday evening, but this was the only fatality.
Evans’ stepfather, Rashid Salaam, said he found the teenager unresponsive Saturday night after hearing gunshots.
“It was around 10:30 or so. I just heard gunshots and it sounded real close to the house,” Salaam told WSB-TV.
According to emergency response teams, the bullet tore through the living room where the teen was watching and hit her just behind the ear. She died instantly.
“She was watching a movie at home. We should be safe in our own homes but we’re not safe in our homes. Put the guns down,” Salaam said.
Police say they have identified a person of interest in what they call an accidental shooting, Marcel Smith, 23.
“When you discharge your firearm you own that bullet. Wherever it goes, you’re responsible for it,” the authorities told the station.
Evans’ family said one bullet claimed the life of the Benneker High School honor roll student and they are grieving as they try to understand how it happened.
