What’s trending? A White woman has been passing for Black for years and was finally outed by her own mother. I think this is hilarious. Her mom says her daughter is being dishonest and deceptive with her identity. When I walked into the beauty shop last Saturday that is what some of the clients were talking about. If you look on Facebook and Twitter you will see the stories and the jokes about Rachel Dolezal, head of the Spokane, Wash., NAACP. Here is what CNN reported:
Rachel Dolezal, 37, has identified herself as at least partly African American. But her Montana birth certificate says she was born to two parents who say they are Caucasian. The parents shared that document and old photos with CNN.
“We are her birth parents,” Lawrence Dolezal told CNN last Friday. “We do not understand why she feels it’s necessary to misrepresent her ethnicity.”
It has been reported that she also does Black hair on the side. I’m not sure if her doing hair is an Internet joke. Next, you will hear that she can fix a mean pot of greens and cleans chitterlings. She probably speaks jive as well.
Remember when the term passing was only used for Black people who were passing as White, what I find so funny is that how many young people don’t know what “passing” is and don’t understand why someone would do it. Oh I pray for better history lessons in schools. It is rare for someone who is White to pretend to be Black unless it is for an experiment on how Black people are treated in stores and when they try to rent an apartment. Right about now, you should be saying to yourself, “why did she do it? Why would she pretend to be colored, I mean Negro, uh oh that is African American, wait a minute it’s 2015 now we say Black, unless there was some good reason.” The Spokesman-Review Newspaper sheds some light on the story. They reported, though, that she has framed the controversy surrounding her racial identity in the context of litigation over guardianship of her adopted brother. According to court documents obtained by CNN, Rachel Dolezal’s adopted brother, who is Black, sought emancipation from Ruthanne and Lawrence Dolezal in 2010. The adopted brother, now 21, said the Dolezals used “physical forms of punishment” and had sent his brother and sister away to group homes because they didn’t cooperate with the couple’s religion and rules.
The adopted brother wanted to live with Rachel “in a multiracial household where Black culture is celebrated and I have a connection to the Black community,” the court papers said. The papers did not specify Rachel’s race.
The petition for emancipation was dropped. In a separate legal action in 2010, the court appointed Rachel to be the adopted brother’s guardian with the consent of Ruthanne and Lawrence Dolezal. It is reported that she had pictures of fake Black parents and when a reporter asked her about her race she ran. Hi, Rachel welcome to our world.
