I first saw the dress on Facebook and was blown away by it. All I could think is I want that dress and then I found the back story in the Huffington Post. At first I thought the dress was purchased but 18 year old Kyemah McEntyre of East Orange New Jersey sketched the dress and then had a seamstress who lived nearby make it.
The seamstress was from Markell’s Closet in Montclair.
The fabric reminds me of the dashiki patterns that my generation wore in the seventies. But it was the long sleeves, and the full skirt and the pockets that drew me in and yes the fabulous colors. By wearing the afro hair style and the right jewelry Kyemah’s look was dynamic.
Kyemah was selected as prom queen and the belle of the ball is heading to New York to study at Parson’s School of Design.

Reportedly Kyemah is busy making the most of her new-found fashion fame and is promoting her artistic and print designs work on Etsy. Her new online store KyesMind looks set to be a huge success and she’s already planning to add new pieces of her artwork.
Her Instagram feed is also fairly similar where her prints are showing for sale at $50-$70 apiece.
