JOURNALIST CHARLES M. BLOW DELIVERS LECTURE HONORING THE LEGACY OF MAYOR HAROLD WASHINGTON

Charles M. Blow, a New York Times Op-Ed columnist, writes about politics, public opinion and social justice discusses the Mechanisms and Mythologies Conspiring against the Marginalized, for the Chicago Public Library’s annual lecture honoring the life and legacy of Mayor Harold Washington.  During his presentation Mr. Blow will speak on the misconceptions and policies that work against the interests of marginalized people and contribute to maintaining their marginalized status.  The lecture will take place Tuesday, May 26 at 6 p.m. at  Harold Washington Library Center located at 400 South State Street, Cindy Pritzker Auditorium, Lower Level.  A reception and book signing follows the lecture in the 9th Floor Winter Garden.

This event brings to a conclusion the 2014-2015 One Book, One Chicago program that explored the theme of Heroes: Real & Imagined, through the selection of Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. One Book, One Chicago is made possible by Allstate and BMO Harris through the  Chicago Public Library Foundation.

One Book , One Chicago is presented in partnership with Chicago Public Library and the Chicago Urban League, the free lecture commemorates Mayor Harold Washington through the acknowledgement of the late Mayor’s contributions to society and Chicago history.  The socially relevant topic of Mr. Blow’s speech complements Mayor Washington’s  efforts to include within Chicago’s political and social circles those who traditionally have been marginalized.

About Charles Blow

Blow grew up in Gibsland, Louisiana. He he attended Grambling State  where  he graduated magna cum laude  in the same state. He has worked as a graphics director and art director for the Times and National Geographic.
In April 2008, he began publishing a column in the Times, featuring charts as a form of opinion journalism. His column originally appeared biweekly on Saturdays. In May 2009 it became a weekly feature, and twice weekly in December 2012. As of May 2014, it appears every Monday and Thursday. Increasingly it is an essay in text with no chart. Blow also wrote a blog entitled “By The Numbers” for the newspaper’s website which was rarely updated and essentially discontinued in 2011.
Blow is a single father of three children. His eldest son attends Yale University[3] and his twins are in high school. They live in Brooklyn, NY
